How much does repointing cost in Toronto?

How much does repointing cost in Toronto?

Repointing is grinding out failed mortar joints and repacking them with new mortar. It's the most common masonry repair in Toronto because mortar wears out decades before brick does. Prices below are typical ranges we see across the GTA; every job is quoted in writing after a site visit.

Typical ranges

  • Spot repointing (a few square feet around a window, a corner, a few loose joints): usually $400 to $900, mostly a minimum-charge job.
  • Section repointing (a porch, a garage front, one wall of a bungalow): roughly $15 to $30 per square foot depending on access and joint condition.
  • Full elevation (the whole front of a two-storey house, scaffold required): commonly $4,000 to $10,000.
  • Century homes with soft lime mortar and thin joints run higher, because the work is slower and the mortar has to be matched for strength, not just colour.

What moves the price

Access is the biggest factor: ground-level work is fast, second-storey work needs scaffold or a lift. Joint depth matters too. If a previous contractor smeared mortar over the surface instead of cutting the joints out, that has to be removed first. Discontinued or unusual brick that needs sourcing adds time.

Repoint or replace?

If the brick face is intact and only the mortar has gone, repointing is the fix. If bricks are spalling (the face flaking off), those units get replaced and the surrounding joints repointed. A wall that's bowing or has rusted lintels is a rebuild question, not a repointing one, and we'll tell you if that's what we see.
